Angelina Jolie’s Personal Life: Marriages, Children, and Life After Hollywood’s Biggest Divorce

•

Angelina Jolie, 51, is one of the most closely watched public figures in entertainment — not just for her acting and filmmaking, but for a personal story that spans three marriages, six children, humanitarian work, and a very public divorce.

Early Life and Family Background

Born Angelina Jolie Voight on June 4, 1975, in Los Angeles, she is the daughter of actors Jon Voight and Marcheline Bertrand. As a teenager she attended the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute, though she dropped out of high school at 16 to pursue acting, having struggled with self-harm and depression in her youth.

Three Marriages

Jolie has been married three times:

• Jonny Lee Miller (1996–2000), whom she met on the set of Hackers. The two have stayed on good terms; Jolie has said they share sons the same age and remain friendly.

• Billy Bob Thornton (2000–2003), a whirlwind relationship known for its unconventional public displays of affection.

• Brad Pitt (2014–2019), her most famous relationship, which began on the set of Mr. & Mrs. Smith in 2004.

Her Six Children

Jolie has six children with Pitt — three biological and three adopted: Maddox (24), Pax (22), Zahara (21), Shiloh (20), and twins Knox and Vivienne (18). All six have dropped Pitt’s surname, now going by “Jolie.”

The Pitt Divorce and Its Aftermath

The split followed allegations that Pitt assaulted Jolie and their children on a private flight in 2016, which he has denied; the two later fought a separate legal battle over their jointly owned French winery, Miraval. The divorce was finalized in December 2024.

Since then, a source close to Jolie says she has not dated anyone, focusing instead on raising her children as a single mother.

A New Chapter: Life After Custody

With her youngest children now legally adults, Jolie’s custody arrangement with Pitt — which required her to keep Los Angeles as her primary residence — has ended. She has reportedly put her Los Angeles estate on the market and plans to split her time between New York (for her fashion venture, Atelier Jolie), Europe, and Cambodia, her longtime second home.

Jolie has spoken about embracing this new independence, describing her children as individuals with lives of their own now that they no longer need her in the same day-to-day way.

Note: Some details here (custody terms, dating status, relocation plans) come from media sources citing anonymous insiders rather than Jolie herself, so treat those as reported rather than confirmed by her directly.
